Calor Rural Pub in the Community Award

2007 Winner Announced

Best Rural Pub In UK 2007 AnnouncedThe Gun in Chiddingly has been announced as the winner of the 2007 Calor Rural Pub in the Community award, beating off stiff competition from other rural pubs around the country.

The Mare & Foal in Yeoford, Devon and The Talbot in Knightwick, Worcester were also given highly commended awards as part of the competition. More about the winners.

The Calor Rural Pub in the Community Award celebrates pubs that are at the very heart of their community. Places that provide the life and soul of a village, that are more than just a place to eat, drink and be merry.

HRH Oversees Competition Entry

On a recent tour of award-winning Welsh Village St Dogmaels, TRH The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall took time out to oversee a local entry into the Rural Pub of the Year competition.

The visit, a reflection of HRH's continued support of the Calor Village of the Year competition, provided the perfect opportunity for locals to show their enthusiasm for their village - and for the owner of the White Hart Inn to hand their entry form.

About The Competition

Calor supports this award aimed at rural pubs to its Calor Village of the Year® competition. The Calor Rural Pub in the Community Award will search for the UK’s best Rural Pub in the Community. The pub is traditionally at the heart of a village and the importance of encouraging sustainable communities is at the very core of the Calor Village of the Year competition. Calor supports this award to celebrate pubs that have diversified their businesses to offer their local community a wider range of services. Pubs which have found innovative ways in which to do this and help their own business success in the process will be highlighted. Calor want to showcase best practice and ideas that other rural pubs and licensees can adopt.

Today it’s often not enough for a village pub just to serve great food and drink. To survive in the 21st century, rural hostelries need to evolve, diversify, become, quite literally, the hub of village life.

They can:

  • Provide Internet and e-mail access
  • Host church services
  • Help with providing meals to local pensioners
  • Act as pharmacy collection points
  • Provide créche facilities
  • Be deposit/collection points for dry cleaning and laundry
  • Set up as off licenses
  • Provide space for convenience stores, Post Offices, betting shops, art and
craft galleries, gyms and fitness centres
  • Act as outlets for farm produce or other locally produced goods

Of course, there are many more ways in which rural pubs can ensure their long-term financial success and benefit their communities. So tell us what your pub does to earn its position right at the heart of the community and you could be the winner of our very first Calor Rural Pub in the Community Award.

The following questions may help you – but remember they are just for guidance and focus, and not the criteria for judging:

  • What measures have you taken to ensure the success of your pub and how does your pub contribute to the life of your community?
  • Have you diversified or extended the activities or services of your pub? Include any future plans.
  • Have you used technology to make your pub more efficient?
  • Have you worked in partnership with other local businesses?
  • Does your sourcing policy help local businesses within your community?
