The Heatherglen Country Hotel
is an elegant late Victorian mansion situated in Cumbria’s
picturesque Eden Valley. As a five star establishment,
in an area of natural beauty, it depends on a reliable
and environmentally friendly fuel source to power its
heating and catering facilities.
That’s where Calor, the UK’s leading supplier
of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), is trusted to deliver
a constant supply of cleaner energy.
The hotel is open 365 days a year for those who wish
to enjoy a relaxing break in the peaceful Eden Valley
or the Lake District. Alan Crossley, who jointly owns
and manages the hotel, took ownership of the business
12 months ago and has transformed the building back
to its former glory.
"It’s the combination of the idyllic location
and the traditional feel of the hotel that attracts
visitors here," he says. "It’s a popular
destination all year round and our reservations book
is testament to this - we’ve rarely got rooms
available."
The Heatherglen Hotel offers seven rooms, all with
LPG central heating and water heating. The decision
to convert the heating system from oil to LPG power
was made by Alan, he says:
"The oil heating was noisy, it emitted fumes and
the storage tank was unsightly - it was just not in
keeping with the quality of the hotel or the picturesque
surroundings."
"This coupled with the new oil storage legislation,
the risk of spillages and resulting fines made my decision
to switch to LPG very easy," he adds.
The house was originally built at the turn of the 19th century and was a privately owned property until 1963 when it became a gentlemen’s club. The hotel is also open for non-residents who are dining at the restaurant and, says Alan, the à la carte menu is one the best in Cumbria. "We are able to cater for large groups but without losing the personal touch you would expect from such a high quality hotel," says Alan.
Responsible for the hotel’s culinary creations is head chef, Chris Taylor, who has been classically trained. Chris insists on the control and cook quality which only gas provides, and as a result, all of Heatherglen’s catering equipment is LPG powered. "There is no substitute for cooking with gas," he says. "The kitchen is equipped with a combi oven, a six ring cooker and a deep fat fryer and when you’re catering for 100 diners you need a fuel you can rely on."
Two 2,000 litre tanks are installed underground at the side of the main building and are topped up every week during the winter months and once a month during summer. "All you can see is two green lids," says Alan. "The tanks are discreetly located underground so not to deter from the beauty of the surrounding countryside and building."
"Calor provided expert help and advice on the installation of the bulk tanks and we always receive deliveries promptly - we’ve never been let down.
"That’s crucial for us, because our business and our guests depend on that reliability, so Calor gives me peace of mind."
Calor’s Alan Seggie points out that the Heatherglen Hotel demonstrates the advantages of LPG as a fuel, as well as the necessity of dealing with an established supplier.
"The location of the Heatherglen Hotel means that only a supplier of Calor’s capability can provide such a network and such reliability," he says. "It’s reassuring to know that whatever the terrain, however remote the location, rural businesses can trust Calor to deliver."
