The Golden Mussel Awards took place on Saturday 16th December in Wells-Next-The-Sea as part of the Wells Christmas Tide 2006. Several thousand people filled the streets of Wells Next The Sea to shop at market stalls and gathered on the Quay to watch fireworks, a talent show by local children and fireworks. Although there was no accurate count, organisers put the numbers at up to 4,000. A fireshow by Thundermental of Norwich was a highlight of the event for many, in Staithe Street and on the Quay.
"We had a lot of positive responses - some visitors had come from as far afield as the West Country" said Chris Rose, chairman of the organising committee. The event was put on by Wells Business Forum which would like to thank all the sponsors and dozens of volunteers who helped.
The Golden Mussel Award sponsored by Calor, also took place on the Quay, attracting a record number of junior entrants. The Junior section was won by Hannah Pigney of Wells, the Open section by Gary Whittaker, a mussel grower from Brancster Staithe, and the Professional Section by Nikki Merchant of Fakenham. Di Black from Burnham Market won the new Chowder section, using locally caught Velvet Crabs supplied by Robin Harris of the Blucher.’ For more information about the Wells Christmas Tide please visit www.wellschristmastide.org.uk
